Tell us more about your vision for Miller’s Point

The City’s Coastal Management Branch is busy developing a long-term vision for the Miller’s Point coastal resort that is located along the False Bay coastline, a few kilometres from Murdoch Valley. Miller’s Point has a popular tidal pool, resort and beach, a launch site for vessels, and is of great ecological and historical importance. Residents, visitors, stakeholders, and interested parties are encouraged to complete an online survey about their experiences at Miller’s Point and their vision for the site. Read more below:
The City of Cape Town’s Coastal Management Branch is busy developing a long-term vision for Miller’s Point, which will include proposed improvements that can be implemented over time to revitalise and conserve this coastal asset.
This process is kicking off with an online survey where residents, visitors, stakeholders and interested and affected parties can share their experiences and views.

Miller’s Point is a 300m wide strip of land that forms a transition zone between the declared Unesco World Heritage site of Table Mountain National Park and the Table Mountain Marine Protected Area.
‘It is an exceptional site, and I’m sure those who have visited Miller’s Point before, or go there often, will agree. It is of great ecological, cultural, environmental and historical importance with a public launch site for fishing boats and is a key entry point to what is known as the ‘Great African Kelp Forest’. Apart from the very popular tidal pool, Miller’s Point has significant archaeological value because of the shell middens and whaling station relics that offer insight into our indigenous history, and of how different groups of people interacted with each other and the environment over millennia. Not to speak of the magnificent mountain and sea views,’ said the City’s Deputy Mayor and Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Alderman Eddie Andrews.
Unfortunately, the site is facing serious challenges because of deteriorating infrastructure, including outdated amenities, eroded pathways, and inadequate visitor facilities. The buildings in the resort are also in a poor condition.
The revitalisation programme is intended to:
- Promote socio-economic benefits and the preservation of cultural heritage
- Promote the preservation and protection of this unique and sensitive coastal node
- Allocate investment for resilient and sustainable infrastructure
- Optimise commercial and educational opportunities
‘The first step is to ask residents, stakeholders, and users to help us understand how they use this site, and what they think should be improved; then, we also want to hear from our participants how they think we can capture and develop Miller’s Point’s full potential for future generations. So, please take a few minutes, go online, and complete this survey,’ said Alderman Andrews.
The City will use the survey results in developing the long-term vision in consultation with local communities, stakeholders, and the broader public. This is only the beginning of the planning process which is set to take place over the next six months or so, and will include further investigations and analysis as part of the scoping phase.
